Several cast and crew members voiced their disapproval of the changes, which shifted the tone from a gritty war film with deep character development and a significant romantic subplot to an action-packed, farcical comedy. Oddball’s Shermans are officially part of the US 6th Armored Division, but their commanding officer was decapitated by a German 88mm gun. The three tank crews have neglected to report this fact, allowing them to enjoy the French countryside while masquerading as a battle-worn unit just out of action.
