Built at the English Electric Works in Preston, “B for Bertie” rolled off the production line like any other Mk I automaton. However, it was during its initial deployment as part of Operation Cavalier, near Antwerp, Belgium, that Bertie could be said to have been truly born.

On 9 June 1946, a contingent of Axis heavy Panzermechs ambushed Bertie's formation. In the chaos, Bertie was lost from sight of its human charges. When the ambush was repelled and Axis forces melted away, Bertie had also vanished. The unit presumed it KIA, but this was not the case.

Low on power, Bertie sluggishly dragged itself back across the battlefield, but its detachment had long since moved on. Rather than simply wither away, its primitive automated system adapted. Bertie became more than a factory-made automaton: scavenging the battlefield, replacing a broken leg, collecting power cells, ammo, and weapons, it set off on a new odyssey.

The box contains one plastic miniature, supplied with plastic base and assembly guide.
