HMS Royal Sovereign – Black Seas: the first-rate power at the heart of Trafalgar
A first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, HMS Royal Sovereign represents the raw strength of late 18th-century naval warfare. Armed with 100 guns, she was built to dominate fleet engagements and withstand the heaviest exchanges of broadsides. Launched in 1786, she gained a mixed reputation among her crews, largely due to her slow speed and limited manoeuvrability, earning the nickname “West Country Wagon”. In Black Seas, these historical traits translate into a powerful but sluggish warship that excels in close-range combat and sustained engagements.
Throughout her service, HMS Royal Sovereign took part in several key naval actions of the era. She notably served during the Glorious First of June and played a crucial role in Admiral Cornwallis’ famous retreat in 1795, where her massive broadside helped deter a superior French fleet. Her most famous moment came at the Battle of Trafalgar, where she acted as Admiral Collingwood’s flagship, leading the lee column and being the first ship to break the Franco-Spanish line. Despite suffering heavy damage, including the loss of her masts, she continued to deliver devastating firepower throughout the engagement.
On the tabletop, HMS Royal Sovereign is an exceptionally strong first-rate vessel capable of delivering punishing broadsides at critical moments. Her effectiveness is further enhanced when Admiral Collingwood is included in your fleet, allowing rerolls on initial broadside attacks for nearby friendly ships. The set includes:
