Foam Clay is a lightweight acrylic-based modelling compound widely used in cosplay, crafts, and miniature modelling. Easy to handle, it can be shaped by hand or with sculpting tools, making it an extremely versatile material. It is ideal for creating detailed terrain pieces, miniatures, diorama elements, and a wide range of creative projects such as DIY crafts or cosplay accessories including armour, weapons, and decorative components. One of its key advantages compared to other modelling materials is that it air-dries naturally at room temperature within 24 to 48 hours.
Foam Clay also stands out for its flexibility and water-based workability. Before drying, it can be easily smoothed to create clean surfaces and seamless joins between parts, resulting in a more professional finish. Once cured, it retains a degree of elasticity, significantly reducing the risk of cracking even on large or frequently handled projects. This makes it particularly well suited for wearable creations such as cosplay costumes that need to be transported or used regularly.
This material also performs very well when used with silicone moulds, allowing quick reproduction of complex textures and fine details. For thicker moulds, a freezing technique can be used to make demoulding easier. Foam Clay also combines effectively with materials such as EVA foam and ThermoArt thermoplastics, especially in larger builds, thanks to its strong adhesion and gap-filling properties. Once fully dry, it can be painted with acrylic paints, with a primer recommended for better adhesion. For flexible pieces, flexible paints are advised to prevent cracking over time.
