“En avant!” The cry echoes through the ranks as the blue columns begin their advance across the battlefields of Europe. Known as “Les Bleus,” the French Line Infantry embody the driving force of Napoleon’s Grand Armée, forged through campaigns against Prussia, Austria, Spain and Russia, and culminating in the final clash against Wellington and Blücher at Waterloo in 1815.
In Black Powder, these troops form the backbone of Napoleonic warfare: disciplined, confident and highly mobile. They advance in tight columns before deploying into firing lines, combining coordinated volleys with aggressive battlefield manoeuvres designed to overwhelm opposing forces through momentum and discipline.
The models depict soldiers in campaign greatcoats worn over their uniforms, a practical choice used extensively in the field to preserve full dress attire for parades and moments of victory. This detail adds authenticity and reinforces their role as active campaign troops rather than parade formations.
The kit also includes options to incorporate Grenadiers and Voltigeurs, allowing players to customise battalion structure and reflect the varied roles within a French infantry regiment.
The metal command group provides a strong visual anchor for the unit, bringing personality and structure to the battlefield while enhancing the overall appearance of the regiment. Combined with the plastic infantry, it creates a cohesive and characterful Napoleonic formation.
On the tabletop, “Les Bleus” represent the energy, confidence and battlefield dominance of Imperial France at its height, marching ever forward in pursuit of victory and glory.
