The French Line Lancers trace their battlefield origins back to a pivotal moment in 1809 at the Battle of Wagram. During the fighting, Polish light cavalry serving under Napoleon captured Austrian uhlan lances and quickly demonstrated their devastating effectiveness in combat.
Impressed by their impact, Napoleon ordered the formal creation of lancer regiments within the French cavalry arm. Several units were raised, some dressed in green and others in blue, all distinguished by their long ash-wood lances with colourful pennants and their striking polished metal helmets that made them instantly recognisable on the battlefield.
In Black Powder, French Lancers offer a highly versatile cavalry option. They can engage enemy horsemen, support infantry lines or exploit breakthroughs with speed and precision. Their role in reconnaissance and raiding also made them especially valuable during campaigns in Spain and Russia.
Armed with a combination of lance, curved sabre and, depending on the unit, carbines or pistols, they posed a constant threat to isolated or disrupted enemy formations.
The kit offers flexible assembly options, allowing you to field a full squadron with or without command models. The combination of lances, helmets and dynamic poses makes for a visually striking unit once assembled and painted.
On the tabletop, French Lancers embody the speed, aggression and tactical versatility that defined Napoleonic cavalry at its most effective.
