French Hussars

In Black Powder, French Hussars provide fast-moving reconnaissance and aggressive battlefield harassment. Their role on campaign often involved scouting ahead of the main force, raiding enemy positions and exploiting weaknesses with speed and daring rather than heavy armour or brute force.

Each Hussar regiment developed its own distinctive appearance, resulting in a dazzling variety of uniforms across the French cavalry. When fielded in strength, they create one of the most eye-catching formations of the Napoleonic era, full of movement, colour and character.

Armed primarily with curved light cavalry sabres, Hussars could also carry pistols or carbines, giving them additional flexibility in close engagements. Their small but hardy horses made them ideal for rapid manoeuvres, hit-and-run attacks and pursuit actions.
