First formed in 1743, the Chasseurs à Cheval were among the most versatile light cavalry units in the French Army. Fast-moving, highly mobile and equally comfortable in open terrain or broken ground, they were tasked with reconnaissance, raiding and screening operations that provided vital intelligence to French commanders.

In Black Powder, these light cavalry troops bring speed, flexibility and tactical reach to Napoleonic armies. Whether scouting ahead of the main force, skirmishing with enemy cavalry or threatening exposed flanks, they add essential mobility to any French command structure.

Armed with curved sabres, carbines and occasionally pistols, Chasseurs à Cheval relied on manoeuvrability rather than brute force. They were also trained to dismount and fight on foot when required, increasing their effectiveness across a wide range of battlefield roles.

By the early nineteenth century, dozens of Chasseur regiments served in the French Army, including those deployed during the dramatic Hundred Days campaign that ended at Waterloo. Their varied equipment and headgear make them a particularly characterful unit for hobbyists.

The kit includes multiple build options, allowing you to customise the appearance and composition of your squadron depending on historical preference or visual style.

  • 12 plastic easy-build French light cavalry miniatures
  • 1 metal mounted officer with horse
  • Optional metal parts for trumpeter and eagle bearer
  • Head options: shako, covered shako, elite colpack fur hat
  • Compatible with Black Powder Napoleonic gaming

With their extensive modelling options, Chasseurs à Cheval can represent a wide range of regimental variations, from campaign-ready troops to elite company formations. On the tabletop, they bring movement, colour and tactical pressure to any Napoleonic French army.

Fast, adaptable and always at the forefront of reconnaissance, they embody the spirit of Napoleonic light cavalry at its most effective.
