Many of these hardened veterans had served for years in Napoleon’s armies and fully intended to defeat the Allies before marching triumphantly into Brussels.

The infantry columns were screened by agile voltigeur skirmishers operating in loose formation, while massed French foot artillery batteries hammered enemy positions with deadly 6-pounder guns.
