First Rate ships of the line represent the pinnacle of naval power in Black Seas. These massive warships function as floating fortresses, combining exceptional durability with overwhelming firepower capable of obliterating most opponents in a single well-placed broadside. Any enemy caught in their firing arc is unlikely to survive long enough to report the encounter. In addition, First Rates have access to the widest range of customisation and upgrade options in the game, allowing players to tailor them to specific tactical roles.
Spanish First Rates are especially distinctive when using their national special rules. Historically known for heavily armed ships, Spanish First Rates may take the “Over Gunned” upgrade at no additional cost. This significantly increases their offensive capability, making their broadsides exceptionally dangerous. However, this power comes with notable drawbacks: such heavily armed vessels are difficult to manoeuvre and must pass a skill test to sail at increased speed. In addition, veteran crews cannot be assigned to ships using this upgrade.
This trade-off creates a unique tactical profile. Spanish First Rates rely on raw firepower rather than refined handling or elite crews. Players must carefully manage positioning and timing to ensure these ships deliver their devastating broadsides at the most effective moment. When used correctly, they can dominate engagements, but poor manoeuvring can leave them exposed due to their reduced agility.
