Santísima Trinidad – the largest ship of the line of the Age of Sail
In Black Seas, the Santísima Trinidad is represented as an exceptionally powerful First Rate ship with unique limitations reflecting her historical size. Her special rules restrict her manoeuvrability, allowing only a single change of direction per activation and requiring a successful skill test to sail at full speed. In exchange, she delivers unmatched firepower, capable of devastating any enemy caught in her broadside. Timing her initial attack is key to unlocking her full battlefield potential.
The Nuestra Señora de la Santísima Trinidad is one of the most iconic ships in naval history and a true symbol of Spanish maritime power. Launched in 1769 with 112 guns, she underwent multiple refits that steadily increased her firepower. Between 1795 and 1796 her armament was raised to 130 guns, and by 1802 it reached 140, making her the most heavily armed warship of her era. This extraordinary configuration included a fourth gun deck, lighter in armament but unique among ships of the line.
However, this immense firepower came at a significant cost. The additional weight severely impacted her sailing performance, making her slow and difficult to manoeuvre. At one point, it was even suggested that she be restricted to harbour defence duties in Cadiz. Despite these shortcomings, she remains one of the very few four-decked ships ever constructed, securing her a distinctive place in naval history.
