Long before the legions of Imperial Rome, Republican armies relied on a very different organisation of heavy and light infantry. This set captures that earlier military tradition with 60 highly detailed Roman Republican miniatures, covering a broad period of Roman expansion from the wars of the early Republic through the major conflicts of the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC.
The main body of the set consists of 36 legionaries. Their equipment allows them to be assembled as Hastati or Principes carrying the pilum, or as Triarii armed with the longer spear. This gives the unit the flexibility to represent several distinct classes of Republican heavy infantry within the same collection.
Command models are included to complete the formation, with 3 Centurions and 3 standard bearers. The set also provides the option to create up to 3 musicians, giving you further ways to distinguish elements within your army.
The remaining 18 light infantry can be assembled in different ways according to the period being represented. They may serve as Velites, used after 211 BC, or as Leves, an earlier type of lightly equipped skirmisher armed with javelins and without shield or helmet.
This broad historical scope makes the set suitable for armies involved in the wars against Pyrrhus of Epirus, Carthage during the First and Second Punic Wars, and the Macedonian kings Philip V and Perseus. The same miniatures can also represent Roman forces campaigning against Gauls, Spanish, Numidians, Italian peoples and Seleucid armies.
