Fighting from the rugged hills and forests of central and southern Italy, the Samnites became some of the Roman Republic's most determined enemies. Their flexible style of warfare and fierce close-combat ability earned them a formidable reputation throughout the long Samnite Wars.
This set contains 24 Ancient Unarmoured Samnite miniatures, representing lightly equipped warriors whose mobility was one of their greatest strengths. Without heavy armour, these fighters capture the appearance of agile Italic infantry well suited to rapid manoeuvres across difficult terrain.
Samnite warriors commonly fought in open formations, using javelins to disrupt their opponents before closing with swords in brutal hand-to-hand combat. Their familiarity with broken and wooded landscapes allowed them to exploit the terrain and challenge Roman armies in ways that conventional battlefield tactics often could not.
Beyond the Samnite Wars, these miniatures offer excellent historical flexibility. They can serve as allies or mercenaries within Carthaginian armies, or be used to represent other Italic peoples such as the Lucanians, Bruttii and Campanians. This versatility makes the set a valuable addition to collections covering the military history of ancient Italy.
