At the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, the Korean People’s Army (KPA) fielded a force of 150,000–200,000 men, trained along Soviet lines, equipped with Stalin-supplied weapons, and reinforced by Chinese veterans. The opening attacks took the UN by surprise due to their speed, coordination, and overwhelming strength.
The KPA foot soldier is renowned for his toughness in the face of brutal combat conditions, harsh Korean weather, and strict command discipline.
The standard LMG squad consists of 10 men, led by a Sergeant and Junior Sergeant. Each squad includes a Degtyaryov DP light machine gun, nicknamed the "record player" due to its iconic round magazine, and a loader to support it.
