Merchant vessels play an important role in Black Seas, even though they are not designed for combat. These slow and heavily built ships prioritize cargo capacity over maneuverability and firepower. Their primary purpose is to transport valuable goods across the seas, making them prime targets for privateers and enemy fleets.
Many game scenarios incorporate these vulnerable ships, adding an extra layer of strategy to your battles. In Blood & Plunder!, opposing privateer fleets compete to seize the cargo carried by merchant vessels. In Landing Expedition, these ships transport troops across dangerous waters to deploy them onto a contested island. These varied objectives shift the focus from pure combat to escort, interception, and tactical positioning.
The Merchant Vessels set allows you to bring these narrative and strategic elements to your tabletop. It includes two ships—a large and a small vessel—both customizable with optional figureheads. These models enhance immersion and scenario variety, reflecting the economic and logistical stakes of naval warfare during the Age of Sail.
