At the centre of the Tone Pro colour progression sits Gnarlwood 3. Each colour in the range is divided into five numbered shades, running from 1, the darkest, through to 5, the lightest. Shade 3 therefore provides a central value within the Gnarlwood sequence, making it a natural reference point when working across the full colour set.
Tone Pro paints are formulated around strong pigmentation and intense colour coverage, including on shades that can traditionally be more demanding to apply. Gnarlwood 3 can be used straight from the pot, with its self-levelling properties helping to produce an even coat and consistent finish on the miniature.
The formula is designed to offer considerably more flexibility than a paint intended solely for basecoating. The same Gnarlwood 3 colour can be incorporated into a variety of techniques, including basecoating, shading, highlighting, glazing and drybrushing. Its role can therefore change as you progress through the different stages of a miniature.
Within the five-step Gnarlwood sequence, the third shade also provides a useful midpoint between the darker and lighter tones. Whether used alongside the other shades or on its own, it gives you another way to build colour variation while keeping the painting process centred around a consistent colour family.
