French Army Infantry Section
In 1939, France declared war on Germany with armed forces superior in tanks and naval strength but hampered by outdated tactical and strategic doctrines at the highest levels. Fighting alongside their British allies, the French army conducted a brave delaying action culminating in the remarkable evacuation at Dunkirk. While the British retreated to England, French forces stubbornly continued to resist as German troops closed in on Paris.
Much has been written about the German armored forces and the British defeat at Dunkirk, but too little attention has been given to the gallant stands made by the French army. At the outset of World War II, France fielded one of the world’s most powerful armies, equipped with effective tanks, solid artillery, and numerous infantry divisions confident in their ability to hold back the invader as they had twenty-two years earlier.
This 10-man French Infantry Section captures the spirit of that determined defense. It includes one NCO armed with a rifle, one soldier equipped with a VB launcher, a two-man light machine gun team, and six riflemen. These soldiers represent the honor and bravery of the French troops who fought on against a technologically superior foe, enduring heavy losses before the ceasefire. Models are supplied unassembled and unpainted.
