Designed under the 1794 Naval Act, the USS Constitution is a heavy frigate built to protect American merchant shipping from Barbary pirates. Her reinforced construction gives her excellent resilience under fire, while still allowing her to carry a powerful armament for her class. She is typically equipped with 24-pounder long guns and 32-pound carronades, and can be over-armed beyond her standard 44-gun rating.
