The Martello Tower is an iconic fortification that adds a new strategic dimension to your Black Seas games. Easy to assemble and visually striking on the tabletop, this defensive structure not only enhances your scenery but also plays an important role in gameplay, especially in coastal engagements and specific scenarios.
Historically, Martello Towers were small defensive forts built during the late 18th century, particularly during the French Revolutionary Wars. Standing around 40 feet tall, they housed a small garrison and were designed to withstand cannon fire thanks to their circular structure. Their flat roofs supported a single artillery piece with a 360° arc of fire, making them highly effective against naval threats. Inspired by a Genoese fortress in Corsica, their design was widely adopted across the British Empire and beyond.
In Black Seas, the Martello Tower is perfectly suited for coastal scenarios and amphibious operations. It plays a central role in scenarios such as “Capture the Fort,” where players compete to seize this strategic position. In-game, it is a large and heavily armed target, comparable to a small third-rate ship. With a full 360° firing arc and bonuses to range and accuracy typical of land fortifications, it becomes a powerful defensive asset. Its inclusion creates highly thematic and narratively rich gameplay experiences.
