The armies of Republican Rome were strengthened by the many Italian peoples who fought alongside them. This set represents those Italian allied contingents with 60 highly detailed miniatures, combining legionary-style heavy infantry with lightly equipped skirmishers.
The box provides 36 legionaries that can be assembled as Hastati or Principes armed with the pilum, or as Triarii carrying the longer spear. Mixed armour styles help give the formation a more varied appearance, reflecting the different traditions that could be found among Rome's Italian allies.
Three Centurions and 3 standard bearers provide the main command elements, while the set also includes the components needed to create 3 musicians. These models help distinguish command figures within the larger formation and add further visual variety.
The remaining 18 light infantry can be used in different historical configurations. They may represent Velites from after 211 BC, or the earlier Leves, lightly equipped skirmishers armed with javelins and without shield or helmet. This makes the set adaptable to different stages of the Republican period.
The miniatures are particularly suited to armies involved in the wars against Pyrrhus of Epirus and Carthage during the First and Second Punic Wars. They can also be used to represent Carthaginian allies or, with minor conversions, other Oscan peoples such as the Samnites, who fought Rome in a series of conflicts before becoming part of the wider Roman sphere.
