Textured rollers are practical and versatile tools designed for working with modeling putties, clays, and sculpting pastes. Made from clear PMMA plastic—a non-toxic, non-stick acrylic material—they ensure clean application without sticking to the surface. With a length of 14.5 cm and a diameter of 2.5 cm, these rollers offer a comfortable grip and even pressure distribution. Ideal for adding complex and consistent textures, they are perfect for hobby projects such as miniature bases, figures, and scenery work.
Before use, make sure to knead your clay or putty thoroughly, following the manufacturer’s recommendations. For best results, start by flattening the material with a smooth roller. Depending on the compound used, slightly moistening the roller may prevent sticking. Roll slowly and evenly to achieve a consistent texture. Polymer clays like Fimo or Super Sculpey work especially well, as they stay workable until baked. They can be textured directly on MDF bases, which withstand baking at 150°C for 15 minutes without burning—though they may emit a toasty smell.
Epoxy putties like Green Stuff or Milliput require different approaches. Green Stuff tends to be sticky and benefits from moistening the roller or applying talcum powder or modeling vaseline to reduce adhesion. Milliput should not be over-hydrated and can be blended with children's modeling clay in a 50/50 ratio for easier handling. If the mixture feels too sticky, additional kneading will improve its workability. After use, rollers should be cleaned with water and a brush pen to remove any remaining material and preserve texture clarity. For safety, these tools should only be used by minors under adult supervision.
