The image of a Spartan warrior is one of the most recognisable in Classical Greek warfare. This set captures the armoured hoplites of Sparta and Laconia during a period spanning from the end of the Persian Wars in the 5th century BCE through the conflicts of the 4th century, including the struggle for supremacy between Sparta, Athens and Thebes.
Inside the box are 48 highly detailed miniatures, with crisp sculpting and an extensive selection of components. The variety of parts makes it possible to build a formation with plenty of visual distinction while retaining the disciplined appearance expected from a body of hoplites.
The heads provide some of the set’s most distinctive options. There are 9 head variants, 7 of which are made from two separate pieces. Hair components attach to the back of the heads to recreate the characteristic long-haired appearance associated with Spartan warriors. Additional choices include a bare head, a shorter shoulder-length hairstyle and a helmeted option, giving you several ways to vary the appearance of your troops.
There is also a selection of crest options for creating officer variants. Weapon and arm components include thrusting arms, resting spear arms and sword arms, allowing different poses to be distributed throughout the unit. A thrusting arm can also be rotated by 90 degrees to create an additional resting-spear pose, providing another useful assembly option from the same components.
Each sprue contains 8 miniatures: four supplied with shield arms and four without. This gives you considerable freedom when assembling distinctive models such as musicians, officers and other special characters within the formation. Cloaks and a range of sword scabbards add further opportunities for variation, helping individual warriors stand apart without losing the visual coherence of the unit.
